Magicomm ‘arrest’ Police bureaucracy by developing a Crime Scene Investigation Report digital pen and paper application making extensive use of Magicomm’s proprietary software libraries.
Magicomm have been working with the Police since January 2004. The initial “live” trial commenced in February 2005 and was a tremendous success. The results were presented at the National Police Scientific Support Conference by the Police and Magicomm in April. Magicomm is now extending the scope of the Pilot to include Car Crime Scene Investigation and full integration into the Force back-end system.
Full deployment is scheduled to commence in October 2005.
“The live trial of Magicomm’s Digital Pen (has data collection and transmit capability) together with a customised application developed to our specification by Magicomm was initially carried out over a five week period. Six Crime Scene Investigators issued with a digital pen together with a mobile telephone were tasked with completing their scene examination reports (prepared on a discretely patterned paper). Once completed, the sheet was ticked in the appropriate box and the information transmitted by ‘blue tooth’ through a mobile telephone, into Dorset’s e-mail system (for the purposes of the trial e-mail was used to do away with the need for any software changes in force – although Magicomm’s technology will transmit direct into the Force server.)
The trial has shown that this technology can not only reduce the double inputting of scene examination reports, but that the information from crime scenes can be made available to an investigator within minutes of the evidence being recovered. This will have major benefits in major crime investigation where early results/information can prevent many man-hours of investigation work and assist the Senior Investigating Officer direct his lines of enquiry.
The pen is user friendly and robust. The CSI’s using the pens did not have any adverse comments and where there were any minor adjustments/amendments required, Magicomm responded and resolved immediately. Their Hand Writing Recognition software implementation worked very well.
Magicomm were very professional in their approach to this joint project and quickly appreciated the police requirements. Overall, an excellent application of this technology with a lot of potential to reduce bureaucracy in many areas of police work.” Terry Marsden, Head of Scientific Investigations, Dorset Police
